When possible I like to work from life, but when subjects are short of time, or in the case of small children, I use sketches or photographs which I have taken myself as reference.  If done from life a portrait will normally take from two to five two hour sittings. When working from photographs, depending on the medium, a portrait can usually be completed in a week or two.
